![]() (Disclaimer – whilst I am “staff” (Read: a forum moderator) on the FLIRC forums I am not employed by Flirc and do not benefit directly, financially or otherwise, from the project I am about to discuss.) I love XBMC: the application, the project and everything it envelops. I’ve been an XBMC user for about 3 years, firstly using my mac then using a shuttle box running Openelec (so I didn’t have to keep connecting/ disconnecting my MacBook Pro). My name is Chris (or pseudo7 on the forums). I’d also like to invite any other software writers or manufacturers to contact me in the forums at username natethomas, if you have come up with a new and unique method for improving the usability of XBMC and would like to share your project. This week, I’d like to introduce Chris (psuedo7 in the forum), who will be telling us a bit about the project FLIRC. My intent was to create a basic configuration that will allow you to use the Harmony Smart Control simple remote to control Plex.In a continuation of the series begun with our write-up of the USB-CEC adapter, we would like to take the time today to highlight another adapter out there that makes controlling XBMC dramatically easier. Basic functionality includes direction, select, context menu, Play/Pause, FF, RW, Skip Ahead, Skip Back, Stop, and Back Button. This assumes you already have an Activity setup in the MyHarmony software to turn on your TV, set the right input, and control surround receiver, etc). It also assumes you have a PC, TV, and audio receiver. I recommend installing the Harmony app on your phone to sync button settings and such, as it's easier than plugging the hub into your computer. Install the latest Flirc software on your computer.Plug in Flirc on your PC (make sure the IR element has reasonable line-of-sight to receive signal) and wait for drivers to install.Click on File > Advanced > Force FW Upgrade (this upgrades to the latest firmware.Click on Devices > Add Device > type Flirc in the first entry and XBMC in the second.MyHarmony should add a device called Flirc Media Player. This provides the basic button functionality for your Flirc it doesn't matter that it's not actually for Plex. In MyHarmony, click on Activities, click on your Watch Plex activity (or whatever you call your Plex-related activity).ħc.Check "Flirc Media Player" to add it as a device for this activity.ħd. Go through the rest of the options using "Next" until you get to "Which device do you use to change channels" and select "Flirc Media Player".ħe. Go through the remaining menus and click "Done". In MyHarmony, select Buttons and choose your Activity from the drop-down menu, clicking "Go". ![]() Assign functions to the remote tied to the "Flirc Media Player" device. The goal is to make sure the remote send an IR signal and it doesn't do something else to your TV or Receiver at the same time (for example, my Plex menu button opened my TV menu as well until I fixed it). In the Android app, click on the menu button in the upper left-hand corner, select Harmony Setup > Sync > Sync Now (MyHarmony does not give correct instructions). In the Flirc software, select Controllers > Full Keyboard.Refer to Plex Keyboard Shortcuts to assign proper functions to your simple Harmony remote.Click on File > Advanced and set the inter-key delay to "0".Click a button on the on-screen keyboard, then click the remote button you wish to pair.If all goes well, you should see "Recorded successfuly".
